This project has been proposed by Tammy Garcia of Daisy Yellow blog. Every week on Friday the day is chosen for sharing 5 blogs that you love, had been following since a long time or had just discovered. The project has been continuing over a month now and i have met many blogs via this project. As my interests are very divergent i decided to do these blog introductions around themes. This week i am dealing with SKETCH blogs. Some are professional and some are amateur blogs. What impressed me about these are the subject matters rather than the quality of sketches. They contain so many details about daily life. But most important of all they encourage me to sketch again...

Sanırım anaokulundan bu yana çizmeyi hiç bırakmadım. Ama bugüne kadar yaptığım çizimlerin/ eskizlerin neredeyse tamamı siyah-beyazdı.

I guess i haven't stopped drawing since my kindergarten days. Yet almost all of the drawings/sketches i have produced were in black and white.

Lisans dönemindeki ders notlarım çoğunlukla kurşun kalem ile yazılırdı. Sanat tarihinde bir slayt için ayrılan süre 90 sn civarında olduğundan eskiz de bu sürede biterdi. Benim herhangi bir şeyi anlamam için önce dinlemem, sonra kafamda birkaç saniye analiz etmem ve ardından kağıda yazmam ya da çizmem gerekirdi. Bir kere kağıt üzerinde gördüğüm şeyi de kolay kolay unutmazdım. Gerçek bir inek olduğumu söylemem lazım. Eskizlerin korkunçluğuna rağmen mezuniyetimden 10 yıl sonra bile sınavlara girerken hala benim notlarımın fotokopi çektirildiğini gördüm. Sanki sanat tarihi defterim benden bağımsız ve ünlü bir hayat yaşıyormuş gibi:)

 During my undergraduate years i kept my lecture notes with pencil. The time limit to show a slide in art history lectures was 90 seconds, so the sketch had to be finished in this period. In order to understand anything first i had to listen, then analyze it for a few seconds and finally write or draw on paper. Once i saw it on paper i would hardly forget it. I must say i was a real nerd. Despite the horrible sketches, i saw that my notes were still being photocopied for art history exams after 10 years past my graduation. It felt as if my art history notebook had taken a famous life of its own:)

Pentel marka bir kalemle yaptığım bu eskizler en fazla 5 dakika ile 30 dakika arasındaki sürelerde tamamlandı.

The sketches were done with a Pentel pen and they were finished in 5 to 30 minutes.

Toplamda 3 haftaya yayılan bu eskizler her gün ve çok yoğun yapıldığı için sonlara doğru oldukça hızlanmıştım.

As the sketches were finished in 3 weeks and done everyday on a very frequent basis, towards the end i had accelerated a lot. 

Sonra gündelik koşturmaca içinde eskiz yapmaya vakit ayıramaz oldum. Daha doğrusu gözlemleyerek eskiz yapmaya son verdim. Bunun yerini aklımdakileri kağıda aktarmak için yaptığım eskizler aldı.(ki onları "Hayalden gerçeğe" gibi bir isimle buraya da koymaya karar verdim) Ama son zamanlarda internette "kent eskizcileri" kavramı altında çalışan bir sürü insanla tanıştım. Yani benim gibi kentte sıkışıp kalan ama gündelik hayatı değerli görüp eskizleyerek ölümsüzleştiren insanlar...Çizmek için illa ki güzel bir manzara aramayan ama otobüs beklerken bile ilginç detaylar görebilen insanlar...(ki o web sitelerinden ayrıca bahsedeceğim) Eskizlerine renk katan insanlar...İşte ben de denemeye başladım. Deneylerimi de buraya yükleyeceğim.Delidir ne yapsa yeridir hesabı:)

And then within the busy schedule of everyday i could not reserve any time for sketching any more. Actually i could not do any more sketches based on observation. Instead, i kept on sketching the things on my mind onto paper (I decided to put them here like something as "from dream to reality") Recently i have met many people on line working as "urban sketchers". They are the people stuck in cities just like me, who treasure everyday life and immortalize it by sketching...They do not look for beautiful landscapes to draw but find interesting details even as they wait for the buses...(i will mention those websites in another post). People who bring color to their sketches...So i started trying. And i will share my experiments here. Crazy people can do anything right:)

Gerçek insan ölçeğinden daha büyük bir heykelin parçası, neredeyse soyut diyebileceğim bir portre olmuş . Keşke tamamı bulunsaymış. (Roma Dönemi)

A piece of a bigger-than-life-size statue, almost  may be called an abstract portrait. Wish the total statue had been found. (Roman Period)

Yetişkin bir insanda başın tüm gövdeye oranı idealde 1e 8 olmalıdır. Bu heykelde oran 1e 5 gibi kaldığı için "koca kafalı" tanımına layık bir durum oluşmuş. Baş ile gövde arasındaki çizgiyi farkettiniz mi?  Antik dönemde belli bir noktadan sonra (MS 2.-3. yy olsa gerek) heykellerin seri üretimine geçilmişti. Artan talepleri karşılamak için standart heykel gövdeleri hazırlanıyor, müşteri geldiğinde ise sadece baş kısmı kişiye özel yontuluyordu. Böylece bitmiş bir heykele kavuşmak için birkaç hafta beklemek yetiyordu. (Rahip heykeli)

For an adult the proportion of head to the whole body should be around 1/8 ideally. For this sculpture the proportion is 1 to 5, therefore the condition is aptly defining "big headed". Did you notice the line between the head and the body? After a certain point in antiquity (around 2.-3. centuries i guess) the mass production of sculptures started. To answer the raising demands, the bodies were being carved as standard types and only the heads were being customized according to the client. Thus it was enough to wait a couple of weeks to have a finished statue. (Priest statue)

One of the methods used to date antique sculptures is the hair styles. Not much different from our day, it is a known fact that every twenty years the styles were changing abruptly.

Bu büstlerin en büyüğü 5cm civarındaydı. Küçük olmalarına rağmen oldukça detaylı çalışılmışlar.

The biggest of these portraits were around 5cm. In opposition to their small size they were carved with great detail.

Yaşadığım yer olan Bornova'nın kuruluş öyküsünde Amazonlar da yer alıyor. İyi ok ve yay kullanabilmek için bir göğüslerini yaktıkları bilinen savaşçı kadınlardı. Heykelde de sol gögüs yok. (MÖ 4. yy)

In the foundation myths of Bornova, the place where i am living, Amazons also have a part. They are known as warrior women who burned one of their breasts to master the use of bow and arrow. The statue does not have the left breast.( 4th century BC)

Eritilip tekrar kullanılabildiği için tunç heykellerin çok az örneği günümüze ulaşabilmiştir. Bu heykel de İzmir'in kuzeyinde Aliağa yakınlarında bulunan Kyme antik kentinin limanında açığa çıkartılmıştır. Antik dünyada Olimpiyatlar sadece erkeklerin katılabildiği bir etkinlikti. İnsan vücudunun başarısını göstermek amacıyla atletler çıplak yarışıyorlardı. Birinci gelenlere zeytin dalından yapılmış bir taç armağan edilir ve zaferlerini ölümsüzleştirmek için heykelleri yapılırdı. Çok az sayıda kent olimpiyat düzenleme hakkına sahipti. Kyme, İon kentleri içinde önemli bir yere sahip olduğu için bu hakkı elde edebilmişti. (MÖ 30-50)

As bronze was easily melted and reused, few bronze sculptures had survived from antiquity. This statue was found in Kyme ancient city harbour, towards the north of Izmir Aliağa. During this period only men were accepted to the Olympics. In order to show the success of the human body, the athletes would race naked. The winners were being awarded with an olive branch crown and to immortalize their victory sculptures would be carved. Very few cities had the right to run Olympics. Kyme, being an important city in the Ionian league, had gained this privilege. (30-50 BC)

I had colored this page with the remaining paint after i painted my shoes.  

Evde çeşitli boy ve kalınlıklarda bir sürü halatım var. İlk başta denizci bağlarını çalışmak için alıyordum ama genel olarak ipleri,sicimleri,halatları seviyorum ben. Çok esnek formları var. Hem de dokuları çok güzel. Sonra kedimle uzun uzun oyun oynuyoruz. Yani iplerin faydaları saymakla bitmez. Bir de ben niyeyse mesleki deformasyon sebebiyle hep ortogonal (dik açılı, keskin köşeli) formlara yöneliyorum. Bunu kırmak için heykel çalışmaya başlamıştım. İpler de bunu kırmak için başka bir araç gibi benim için. Dün halatlardan biriyle bir kolye yapmayı düşünürken aklıma geldi. Sayfaya 2 tanesini yerleştirdim.

I have tons of ropes/cords of different length and thickness at home. At first i was buying them to practice sailor knots but i love ropes, lanyards, twines, threads. They have flexible forms. Moreover they have excellent texture. And i play with my cat for a long time using ropes. So the uses of ropes are countless. Somehow, because of professional deformation, i always tend towards orthogonal (perpendicular, sharp cornered) forms. I started studying sculpture to break this attitude. Ropes are another tool for this as well. As i was thinking to make a necklace with one of the ropes it suddenly occurred to me and i placed two of them on the page.

Then i traced the ropes and painted the traces with acrylic paint.

Bu aralar fena halde canım sıkkındı. Sadece parlak bahar renklerini kullanıp sayfayı boyadım. Aklıma gelen en ünlü denklem Einstein'ın izafiyet (=relativity) teorisi olduğu için onu yazdım. Bahçeyi biraz soyutlayıp yaprakları ve bir çiçeği boyadım. En son nefret ettiğim pembe boyayı alıp parmaklarımla desenler ekledim. Einstein'ın fotoğrafını da ekleyince sayfa tamamlanmış oldu.

Nowadays i am not feeling well. So only using bright spring colors i painted the page. As the most famous equation i knew was Einstein's relativity theory i had written it. I abstracted the garden a bit and painted leaves and a flower. Last, i have added patterns with my finger in the most hated color, pink. After the photo of Einstein was pasted, the page was finished.

Balçova Manastır Gezisi/ Balçova Monastery Trip

Gezi başlangıcında manastır olduğu iddia edilen bir yapı vardı ama çok uzakta olduğu için fotoğraflayamadım./ There was a so called monastery at the beginning of the trip but it was too far away to be photographed.

Parkur Balçova Termal Oteli'nin arkasından başlıyor/ The route starts behind Balçova Thermal Hotel.

Hemen çam ormanının içine geçiyor ve dağa doğru tırmanmaya başlıyor/ Immediately rushes into the pine forest and starts climbing towards the mountain. 

Ve giderek ağaç nüfusu yoğunlaşıyor/ And the tree population grows as you climb.

 İlk durakta da güzel bir düzlüğe varılıyor./ On the first stop you reach a beautiful flat plain.
